Springfield trappingSpringfield Groundhog Tip of the Week: What are some ways to kill a groundhog in the yard?
A groundhog is often a cute creature but is one to worry about if you have a yard or garden. But, once they invade your property, you may have a different story to tell about them. Despite their cuddly appearance, these critters love to dig, creating interconnected burrows all over a yard. They will also cause extensive damage to your garden by feeding on your fruits and vegetables. Therefore, you'd probably look for ways of getting rid of these messy fellas once and for all. And that's where killing comes into play. However, you need to ensure that your state allows for the killing of groundhogs. Here are some of the ways to kill a groundhog in your yard.

Using body grip traps
You can trap groundhogs using different types of traps. Live cage traps will capture the rodent without causing any harm or killing it. However, there are also traps that you can use to trap and kill the critter. The most effective traps used for killing groundhogs are the body grip traps. These traps have a spring mechanism that is easily triggered when the animals step on them. They will crush the body of the animal, killing it instantly. So, you need to set it away from your pets. Otherwise, they may step on it accidentally and get killed. It would help if you placed the trap at the entrance of the burrow, where it can easily trap and kill the critter as it leaves the burrow.

Poisoning
Besides traps, you can also use poison to kill groundhogs. However, there is no pest poison specifically formulated to kill groundhogs. Thus, you can use other pest poisons such as rat poison to kill the critter. The toxic substance in rat poison is enough to kill other rodents such as squirrels and groundhogs. When you opt for a poison to kill the critters, you should sprinkle it around the burrows or on baits such as fruits and vegetables. However, the poison may also kill other animals, such as pets in the yard.

Shooting
If you are a licensed gun holder, you may use your gun to shoot and kill groundhogs in your yard. However, this is an unpopular method of killing groundhogs because of their size. Again, before you pull that trigger, you need to confirm with the local wildlife office if you are legally allowed to use guns in killing wildlife.

Even though killing could seem one of the best options to get rid of critters permanently, it's very inhumane, and therefore, it is not the best way to get rid of stubborn groundhogs. Instead, you can use a live cage trap to catch the animal and relocate it or take it to a vet for merciful killing.
