South Bend trappingSouth Bend Groundhog Tip of the Week: What do wildlife rehabilitators do with groundhogs?
If you've ever heard about wildlife rehabilitators, you've probably tried to figure out what it could be like rehabilitating a wild animal. Just like humans, wildlife need care and nurture to get better. And that's why a wildlife rehabilitator exists. A wildlife rehabilitator is a professional animal handler dedicated to raising and taking care of wildlife before releasing them into the wild. Groundhogs go through a lot while in the wild. They can be bitten by other animals, struck by cars, or wounded by traps. And that's where wildlife rehabilitators come in handy. They often take the injured critters, rehabilitate, and release them back to the wild once they recover. For one to be a wildlife rehabilitator, they have to go through a specific course before getting licensed.

Below are some of the things that wildlife rehabilitators do with groundhogs.

Assessing the injured groundhog's chances of survival
When you come across an injured groundhog, you need to contact your local rehabilitation center immediately. Since it is an emergency, contact them by phone and do not send them an email. The first thing the rehabilitator will do with the groundhog is to assess its survival chances. The assessment will help the rehabilitator determine whether to proceed with animal treatment or euthanize it. Rehabilitators will only focus their attention on animals with high chances of survival.

Taking care of the injured animal
Once the rehabilitators have determined that the injured groundhog can survive, the next step is to help them heal. These professionals can help the critter recover from minor injuries by cleaning and dressing the wounds with appropriate antiseptics. However, since rehabilitators do not have enough experience to treat severe injuries, they may enlist the services of a veterinarian.

Rehabilitating groundhog for release into the wild
A wildlife rehabilitator's main objective is to take care of the groundhog until it becomes healthy and ready to be released back into the wild. Sometimes, it may take a lot of work for the critter to get a chance of survival in the wild. The process of releasing the animal back to its natural habitat is gradual and involves temporary freedom and smaller releases before the rehabilitator can eventually release it into the wild fully.

Besides rehabilitating injured groundhogs, wildlife rehabilitators also raise and care for the baby critters to adulthood. So, next time you come across an abandoned nest of baby groundhogs, call your local wildlife rehabilitator to pick them up.
