Reading Groundhog Tip of the Week: Is a groundhog that is active during the daytime rabid?
Due to the family groundhogs fall into, it is not uncommon to assume that they are nocturnal animals. This is because many animals in the rodent family are primarily nocturnal. This is however not true for groundhogs as they are not nocturnal animals. They are diurnal. This means that they are active during the day but may also come out at night as well. Therefore, the general misconception that a groundhog sighting during the day means that the animal is rabid does not hold true. There are many reasons groundhogs may be roaming around during the day. Some of them are highlighted below:
It's looking for food
Groundhogs usually go about their day searching for food for themselves and their young. They are majorly herbivorous, feeding on plants, shrubs, and grass. However, they also eat other things like insects, bugs, and little bird eggs if they become available. They eat the bugs to supplement their protein.
It's mating season
During its mating season, mature groundhogs come out in search of mates. This happens just after the winter hibernation. During this season, males and females can mate at any time of the day and males can move from one location to another in search of a mate, resulting in daytime sightings.
Protection against predators
Almost every animal in the animal kingdom has a predator. If you see a groundhog during the day, it is possible that it is trying to escape from a predator who might want to harm it. The first instinct of the groundhog will be to run when it sees a predator. However, they may stay and defend themselves if they have baby groundhogs in the area and they are trying to defend them.
Does this mean that a groundhog cannot be rabid?
No. Many groundhogs indeed carry the rabies virus and are capable of transmitting it to humans. However, seeing them in the afternoon is not the only indication of the disease as they can be perfectly healthy and still roam about during the day. There are a few signs to watch out for in a groundhog to determine if it is indeed rabid or not. These include: foaming in the mouth, partial or full paralysis, anxiety, aggression among other things. If you notice any of these signs, it is better to stay clear of the animal and notify the nearest wildlife management company immediately.
