Lexington trappingLexington Groundhog Tip of the Week: What is a groundhog's mating habits, when do they have babies, how do they raise their young?
Groundhogs are common in North America and you may wonder how they give birth to their young. Groundhog babies start their life around spring. Babies are raised in burrows dug by the mother.

Groundhog mating season
The mating season usually begins around February as soon as the groundhogs come out of hibernation. The altitude and latitude of the habitat in which the groundhogs live will largely determine when they will come out of hibernation. The males first emerge around March and then the females also emerge several days or weeks later. After emerging from hibernation, the males start to look for females to mate with. They will mate until early spring until the females go into gestation. Unlike many species that give birth to offspring multiple times per year, groundhogs only have offspring once a year. They use the remaining time to care for their offspring.

Gestation and birthing
Groundhogs have relatively short pregnancies when compared to other animals in their family. Gestation for groundhogs usually takes about 32 days. After this, the groundhogs give birth to their young. The mother prepares a birthing chamber prior to the arrival of the babies. The birthing den is usually about 3 times the length of the mother. This is to give it enough space during the birthing. The inside of the burrow is lined with plant fiber to keep the babies warm after they are born. The burrows are made to keep the babies safe from harm as they develop. Female groundhogs may have as many as 10 babies at once. However, most times, they usually give birth to about 3 or 4 cubs/kits.

Groundhog babies
Kits or cubs of groundhogs are usually born hairless and pink. Although their eyelids are open when they are born, they typically open their eyes after one month. The kits rely solely on their mother's milk for about 5 weeks after which they are weaned. After weaning, the mother will provide them with needed food until they are mature enough to survive on their own. This maternal care may be one of the reasons why groundhog species are successful and have a high survival rate.

How groundhog babies are raised
Groundhogs are one of the mammals that care for their young. The female protects and cares for the babies until they are old enough to fend for themselves. Mothers make burrows to house the babies and often bring them food after they are weaned.
