Kalamazoo trappingKalamazoo Groundhog Tip of the Week: How to keep groundhogs out of my garden
As easy-going as a groundhog may seem from afar, they can still cause significant damage if they find their way into your home and garden. As they are majorly herbivores, the garden of the home is a good place to find food. They can eat virtually everything that grows in the garden therefore it is important to remove them as soon as you notice any activity of groundhogs in your garden. Here are a few things you can do to keep them out of your garden.

Use scare tactics
Groundhogs are mostly shy animals who try to keep to themselves. They hate sudden loud noises and they will run away if they hear such. You can install naturally noisy decorations such as wind chimes or pinwheels to scare them away. If they hear such sounds they are likely to run away from the garden. Alternatively, you can install sonic devices that make low-frequency noise that deters them. These devices are safe for use around pets and humans as they cannot hear the noise.

Build a fence
Although groundhogs are good jumpers and they burrow quite well, fences can still be used to keep them away if installed properly. To build a fence, use chicken wire and posts. The wire should be at least 6 feet tall and the pole at least 5 feet tall. When installing the fence, dig a small trench at least 12 inches into the ground to discourage the groundhog from digging burrows into the ground to link your compound from outside. Leave the last foot at the top of the fence unattached to the post and fold it out to prevent the groundhog from climbing over it. After installing the fence around your compound, you can also install a smaller one around your garden (at least 4 feet tall) in case the groundhogs manage to find their way into your compound.

Trap and relocate it
The surest way to ensure that groundhogs leave your garden alone is to remove them totally from your environment. Live trapping is the best way to go about this. Find out where the groundhog burrows are located and set the trap about 5 to 10 feet from the entrance. Once the trap has caught a groundhog, it automatically snaps shut. You can then carry the trap to a far location and release the groundhog there. Make sure that the groundhogs do not have babies in their burrows before relocating them as this can cause a host of problems later.
