Jersey City trappingJersey City Groundhog Tip of the Week: Do groundhogs make good pets?
Groundhogs, usually known as woodchucks or whistle pigs, are the largest members of the rodent family. They are cute to look at and their roles in movies also do a lot in endearing humans to them. Although groundhogs are majorly wild animals who live in burrows, it is not unusual to see them around the house being kept as pets. If you are about to get one as a pet, there are some things you need to keep in mind.

It is demanding work
Most domesticated animals do not require special attention. They just need to be fed, bathed once in a while, and provided with where to sleep. Well, groundhogs are not like that. Deciding to take them in requires a lot of work. They are wild animals and so their natural environment is in the wild. Therefore, domesticating them requires a lot of monitoring and care. What's more, once they become adapted to being dependent, they cannot survive in the wild on their own anymore.

They are very destructive
When thinking of taking in a groundhog, bear in mind that they belong to the rodent family and their trademark is chewing on things. From the moment you take them in, nothing is safe again. They will chew on anything they can find, be it furniture, upholstery, carpets, and even wires. Sometimes they can even chew through drywall! This may cause major structural damage to the home and they might even get electrocuted in the process. They are also active swimmers and good tree climbers. They will often enter swimming pools in search of fruits or nuts and may climb trees for this purpose too.

They need space
Unlike cats and dogs that may be confined to the house, groundhogs cannot. They are the largest member of the rodent family and they love to actively move around. Being confined to a cage is bad for their survival. Therefore, space is something to consider when thinking of adopting a groundhog.

The pet problem
If you already have a pet dog, then getting a groundhog may be difficult. This is because dogs do not like groundhogs and vice versa. When it comes down to a fight, a grown groundhog may stand its ground against an attacking dog. They will however be injured in the process. Baby groundhogs are also likely to be killed if attacked by a dog. It is therefore best to not have a groundhog if you already have a dog. In conclusion, while groundhogs are furry cute little animals, they can wreck a lot of damage in the house, they therefore do not make good pets.
