Indianapolis Groundhog Tip of the Week: What diseases do groundhogs carry?
Groundhogs are frequently encountered by humans. Due to the holes they dig and their search for food, it is not unusual to find them around human habitats. As fun as these animals may seem, they however carry various diseases that they may transmit to humans if care is not taken. Some diseases that groundhogs may carry include:
Rabies
Rabies is one of the most feared diseases carried by groundhogs. It may be transmitted via saliva resulting from a bite from an infected animal. The disease can infect both humans and animals alike. Rabies virus has a dormant stage which may vary from person to person in which the virus gradually multiplies within the host. Once symptoms of the disease start to show, the disease has no cure. It can however be treated with a vaccine if caught early on after the bite.
Tularemia
Also known as rabbit fever, tularemia is a rare disease that affects the eyes, skin, lungs, and lymph nodes. The disease is transmitted to groundhogs by insects and humans can contract it when they come in contact with an infected groundhog or its feces. Some of the symptoms of the disease include swollen lymph glands, cough, chest pain, skin ulcers, and difficulty breathing.
Vector-borne diseases
Groundhogs can carry ticks and fleas on their bodies. These ticks and fleas can cause diseases such as Lyme disease and Powassan to humans and pets alike. The fleas carried by groundhogs can also transfer tapeworm larvae to humans. Perhaps the scariest is the fact that fleas are responsible for carrying the popular bubonic plague. Attached to the groundhogs, they may easily be transmitted to humans. Symptoms of tick and flea infestation include itchy skin, redness, and spots that turn into wounds. Although ticks do not directly affect humans, they still affect the wellbeing of pets.
Other risks
Although not a typical disease carried by groundhogs, holes dug while the animal is going about its day can seriously injure humans if they unknowingly step into it.
