Fayetteville trappingFayetteville Groundhog Tip of the Week: What equipment is needed to trap a groundhog?
Trapping wildlife is a bit intricate: it requires special equipment and skills to complete the work. If groundhogs have infested your property, the truth is that you will find it challenging to get rid of them. But, if you're a DIY enthusiast, having the right tools for the job is a first shot to getting the work done. We don't advocate for killing these messy creatures, but instead, trapping and relocating them. To get the work done, you need the equipment below.

Traps
There are two main traps that you can use to trap and relocate groundhogs. The most commonly used trap and one that is acceptable in most states is the live cage trap. This is a safe trap that does not harm the animal in any way. It is made of a wire mesh and is typically 12" X 12" X 32". The live cage has one door which closes automatically when the animal enters the cage.

The other type of trap is the body grip trap, mainly used to trap and kill groundhogs. This trap is loaded with springs and metal with jaws that will pierce through the animal, killing it almost instantly. The body grip trap is prohibited in most states, as it is considered an inhumane way of getting rid of groundhogs.

Baits
Now that your cage trap is ready to capture your guest, you may need extra help to lure the groundhog into the trap. Groundhogs love vegetables and are easily attracted by their smell. The most effective bait to use is fruits and vegetables such as bananas, strawberries, and apples. Cut them into chunks and place them inside the cage trap.

Protective gear
Groundhogs are disease and parasite carriers and can easily transmit them to you if you do not take extra caution. Therefore, you need to wear protective clothing such as leather hand gloves and thick clothes to protect yourself. It would help if you also covered your mouth using a mask and your eyes using goggles to prevent any disease-causing microorganism from getting into contact with your body.

You will also need a vehicle to transport and relocate the animal. You will need to cover the cage with a thick blanket to confuse the animal and keep it calm.
Having the above tools isn't a guarantee to a successful groundhog removal process. If you don't have the necessary skills for getting the job done, contacting a local wildlife removal agency would be a great idea.
