Elizabeth trappingElizabeth Groundhog Tip of the Week: What should I do with a groundhog after I catch it?
Even though trapping is the best way to get rid of critters, you might find yourself in confusion after catching the critter. Things can turn even more complicated when trapping and relocating animals is prohibited in your state. So, yeah, the next troubling question could be, “Where can I take the trapped animal?” Well, worry no more as we'll take you through some of the options.

Groundhogs can wreak havoc on your garden with their big appetite for fruits and vegetables. Getting rid of them can be a welcome relief, especially if they have tormented you for a long time. You can get rid of the critters in several ways. Some of the methods include fencing and the use of repellents. Other methods may include trapping the animal.

While trapping is one of the most popular methods of getting rid of a groundhog, what to do with it may limit your option of using this method. However, you can do several things with the groundhog after you catch it. Here are some of the things you can do.

Relocate the critter
One of the things you can do with a groundhog after trapping is relocating it to a different area. However, since these critters are disease carriers, some states do not allow for their relocation. Therefore, you need to confirm with your area's wildlife service whether it is legal to relocate the creatures. Once the animal is trapped in a cage, you can transport it using a vehicle and release it 10 miles away from your property. Wildlife services often recommend that you release the animal in a state wildlife management area or get permission from private property owners before releasing it on their property.

Take the critter to a wildlife rehabilitator
Besides relocating the groundhog far from your property, you can take it to a wildlife shelter for care. This is particularly important if the critter has an injury or is still too young to survive on its own in the wild. Some states have designated wildlife rehabilitation centers where such animals can be taken care of before they are released back to the wild.

Kill the animal
If you cannot relocate the animal or take it to a shelter, you can euthanize it yourself or request the wildlife services to do it on your behalf. However, before you kill any groundhog, you need to confirm whether it is legal to do so in your area. In states where killing the animal is permitted, you can shoot the animal using a gun.
