Detroit trappingDetroit Groundhog Tip of the Week: How to get groundhogs out from under a shed or porch
If you have watched the movie Groundhog's Day, you know how cute these little creatures are. But, in reality, these rodents can mercilessly damage your garden and property until you are left with nothing if you do not get rid of them. Like most critters, groundhogs find under porches and sheds a great place to live. So, if you're sure enough that a groundhog has invaded your shed or porch, you need to get rid of it immediately before it causes extreme damage with its digging habits. When it comes to any wildlife removal exercise, there're always two possible strategies: lethal and non-lethal. Even though the lethal way seems like a pretty fine solution to wildlife, it's never effective and not recommended. Since many states have regulations on how to get rid of wildlife, you should check with your local laws and ordinances to ensure the method you use will not have legal ramifications. Here are the two main non-lethal methods you can use to get rid of groundhogs.

Use of live traps
Live traps are ideal for getting rid of messy critters since it's safe and secure. The most common means of getting rid of a groundhog is using one-door live traps or cage traps. These traps are typically 12" X 12" X 32". They're designed with triggers that close the door behind the critter as soon as it gets on board. They are incredibly popular because they do not cause any harm to the critters. If you're planning to use live traps, check with your local store and grab a few for the task. Besides being safe and humane, live traps are pretty simple to use.

Once you buy a live cage trap, wash it to remove the human scent, then put on hand gloves when handling it. Place the trap near your porch or shed and disguise it with dirt or leaves. You can also bait the trap using an apple or banana to lure the groundhog. Once the groundhog has been trapped, you can relocate it at least 10 miles from your property and release it where it can thrive.

Use of repellents
Besides live traps, you can also use repellents to scare away the critters from your porch or shed. Most repellants produce an unpleasant smell or taste that makes the animal irritated. Some of the repellents you can use include Epsom Salt and ammonia. Once you have an effective repellent at hand, you should apply it around your porch or shed to keep the groundhogs away. However, repellents don't come without a limitation. One of the downsides of repellents is that you will need to apply them repeatedly because their odor or taste goes away with time.
