Clarksville trappingClarksville Groundhog Tip of the Week: What are some problems caused by groundhog digging?
As cute as groundhogs are, they may cause quite a lot of problems if they are around your property. The fact that they are always burrowing and they love to chew on everything makes them an enemy to many property owners. If you have a lawn or a garden, then having a groundhog around is very dangerous. Some damage caused by groundhog digging are as follows:

Damage to vegetation
Although groundhogs can eat other things, they are mostly vegetarians, feeding on leaves, fruits, roots, and vegetation. Once they gain access into the garden, they immediately start digging and they may damage crops and plants in the garden. You may wake up to see half-eaten fruits and vegetables or plants uprooted and eaten. If you have a lawn, groundhogs can tunnel through it, causing ugly dig marks on the lawn.

Serious injuries to children, pets, and livestock
Pets and livestock can get wounded if they step into a burrow and get stuck in the ground. Children playing in the backyard can also get fractures if they step into a hole made by groundhogs.

Hideouts of other dangerous animals
Dangerous animals such as snakes can use burrows made by groundhogs as hideouts. If the snake sees that the burrow is abandoned or there is no one home, it may use the burrow as its temporary home. This can pose serious threats to children, livestock, and pets who may accidentally stumble upon the burrow. It is therefore advisable not to leave children, pets, or livestock alone outside the house without supervision.

Damage to buildings and structures
Groundhogs can burrow under buildings and structures on a property causing structural damage. They may also chew wood and walls of buildings causing the need for major repairs.

How to prevent damage?
There are many things that can be used to prevent groundhogs from causing significant damage to the house. This includes building a perimeter fence around gardens and lawns and installing scare devices. The best method to prevent damage, however, is to have the groundhog totally removed from the vicinity. You can use a trap to achieve this. Set up a trap near the entrance of active burrows and put a bait to encourage the groundhog. Once the trap has caught the groundhog, you can then have it relocated safely away from your property. If you cannot do this on your own, you may decide to employ the services of professionals to remove the groundhogs for you.
