Chattanooga trappingChattanooga Groundhog Tip of the Week: What are some of the symptoms of a sick groundhog?
Unlike many other members of the rodent family, groundhogs carry only a few diseases. Some of the diseases they carry are capable of causing serious illnesses in humans if they get infected by them. It is therefore important to look out for signs of sickness when you find a groundhog and then stay away from such an animal to prevent an infection. Having adequate knowledge will also help you to better protect your pets and little children around. There are a number of signs you will notice in a sick groundhog, depending on the disease it has. Some of them are discussed below:

Rabies
Rabies is very infectious and usually has no cure once the disease has progressed. A rabid groundhog has the following symptoms: aggression, seizures, anxiety, excessive salivation, foaming at the mouth, phobia of water. All of these signs can be noticed in a rabid groundhog. Such animals should be treated with extreme caution. Do not go near it and avoid your pet touching or having any contact with the animal too.

Tularemia
This is a rare but very infectious disease that can infect groundhogs. In humans, it can cause severe damage to the lungs, lymph nodes, and eyes. Tularemia can be contracted by humans through insect bites or by having direct contact with the animal. Signs to look out for in a groundhog include skin ulcers or lesions and signs of exhaustion in the animal.

One major indication of a sick groundhog is its boldness and signs of aggressiveness. Normally, groundhogs avoid people. They try as much as possible to stay away from humans. However, a sick groundhog is more likely to come close to people or even show signs of aggression. A rabid groundhog is most likely disoriented and isn't aware of its surroundings and so they may end up in people's homes and properties.

What to do about sick groundhogs
Having sick groundhogs around poses a threat to homeowners and their pets as many of the diseases they transmit can be life-threatening. If you spot any groundhog behaving erratically, the best thing to do is make sure you and your family avoid such animals. Reign in your pets so they do not go close to the groundhogs and get the help of professional wildlife removers as soon as possible. Do not attempt to remove a groundhog showing signs of sickness from yourself and make sure you wear adequate protective clothing if you do get close.
