Bridgeport trappingBridgeport Groundhog Tip of the Week: How to keep groundhogs away from your property
Groundhogs are among the list of the most destructive critters in homes. Have your neighbors complained of a groundhog invasion, but you haven't seen the critters on your property? Or they haven't started burrowing on your property, and you're wondering how you can keep them away? If so, then we've got you covered. And without a doubt, there are several things you can do to keep the pests away. However, you need to ensure that the method you use is legally permitted in your state. Otherwise, you may be arrested and charged with wrongful handling of wildlife. Here are some of the ways to keep groundhogs away from your property.

Fence off your property
Fencing is one of the most effective ways of preventing groundhogs from accessing your property. Besides keeping groundhogs at bay, an effective fence will also keep away other critters such as squirrels and armadillos. The good thing about a fence is that you can make it from either wood or metal and enhance your property's safety. However, when constructing a fence, it should include the right features to prevent groundhogs from digging underneath or climbing over into your compound. To ensure your fence is groundhog-proof, make sure it is at least two feet into the ground to make it difficult for groundhogs to dig through. It should also not be straight up from the ground as that would make it possible for a groundhog to climb over it. Therefore, make it slightly curved at the top to make it difficult for the groundhogs to climb up. Also, ensure all fence openings are less than three inches large to prevent a groundhog from squeezing through the spaces into your yard.

Keep your property clean
Keeping groundhogs out of your property when your compound has plenty of food is nearly impractical. The smell of vegetables and fruits easily attracts groundhogs. If you wonder why these cute and stubborn creatures frequent your property, you may want to check around for some leftovers on your property. Therefore, you need to keep your yard clean by picking fruits and vegetables as soon as they are ripe. Additionally, you need to clear any food from your yard and secure your trash cans properly to ensure they do not release any odor that might attract these unwanted animals.

Eliminate nesting opportunity
Groundhogs, also known as woodchucks, burrow mostly in dry dirt where they can nest and breed. Thus, you need to eliminate any nesting opportunity by keeping your property less appealing to them. Trim the grass and bushes on your property and fill all the holes in your yard. If possible, keep the soil moderately moist to discourage groundhogs from burrowing.

Note: If the above-discussed methods fail to give a desirable result, then it's time to call in experts to keep the groundhogs away from your home.
