Ann Arbor trappingAnn Arbor Groundhog Tip of the Week: Do mothballs help repel groundhogs?
Have you been using repellents to get rid of groundhogs from your property? If so, then you may know the most effective repellent to use. However, if you have not used one before and want to try it out, you need to know which type to go for. Even though mothballs have been highly touted as an effective repellent, it's more of a hoax peddled by companies to lure unsuspecting buyers. Besides being ineffective, mothballs are highly toxic to both pets and humans in the household.

How effective are mothball repellents?
Although groundhogs detest the smell of mothballs, the truth is that these repellents are not strong enough to keep the critters away. Some people have reported low to a mild level of success, while others claim that the repellent does not work at all. So, you may want to opt for more effective or strong deterrents against groundhogs. Such repellents include ammonia and Epsom salt. These chemicals can be an excellent substitute for mothballs.

Why are mothballs ineffective?
Mothballs are very toxic and produce the kind of smell that should keep groundhogs away. Because animals have a strong sense of smell, these chemicals should repulse them further. But this is not always the case when it comes to mothballs. Groundhogs are hardy and relatively resilient. As such, they can quickly get used to the smell of mothballs. Therefore, they can simply ignore the part of the burrow with mothballs and move to other parts of the burrow without mothballs. In most cases, groundhogs cheat mothballs by simply moving to the adjacent burrows and continue with their activities or simply ignore the smell altogether.

What are the alternative options?
While mothballs repellents aren't the best bet for deterring groundhogs, there are plenty of other effective repellents on the market. Therefore, the next time you are thinking of using a repellent to get rid of groundhogs, you can go for the most effective options, such as ammonia spray or Epsom salt. However, all these repellents have one problem in common with mothballs in that you need to spray them many times and keep the smell concentrated around your property. Otherwise, you may fail in keeping the groundhogs away using repellents. Whether you're looking for the best repellent to keep away groundhogs from your property, or under sheds and porches, buying and using mothballs is a waste of time, effort, and money. Therefore, if you opt for repellents, some chemicals such as Epsom salt and ammonia are worth trying. And if you're not sure of the best method that can work for your case, contacting wildlife removal agencies or experts can get the puzzle solved.
