Fairfax County Groundhog Tip of the Week: What is a groundhog's natural diet, and how does it get its food?
Aside from being indicators of spring each year, groundhogs are also of other economic importance. They can chew through almost every material there is and cause serious destruction to homes. It is therefore important to know what they eat so as to understand how to cope with them.
Groundhogs are major herbivores, preferring to eat garden crops like lettuce, celery, peas, beans, and more. If you have a small garden in your home, it is not unusual to have groundhogs visit in search of food. They can dig holes all around your garden and destroy the plants while trying to eat them.
Groundhogs love to eat fruits like berries, apples, and cherries. They are good climbers so they may climb the trees to get fruits or they may also eat fallen ones.
Twigs and flowers
Barks and twigs are also among the beloved delicacies of groundhogs. They especially love black cherries and dogwood. They also love dandelions, daisies, and red mulberry leaves.
Although primarily herbivorous, groundhogs may feed on small animals if they find them. Snails, bugs, and grasshoppers may form part of their diet if they come across it.
The things listed above form part of the diet of a groundhog. If you have any of these things, there is a possibility of getting a visit from groundhogs. While on your property, they may burrow into the ground and have their children there. This may become an issue as they will most likely not leave on their own unless you have them removed.
Signs of groundhog activity in your orchard or garden may include missing plants, partly chewed leaves, barks or fruits, burrowed holes, etc. If you have a groundhog playing house on your property, the best thing to do is remove it. You may decide to do it yourself or better still contact a professional who will have them removed at a minimal cost.
Seasonal feeding habits
Groundhogs have different feeding patterns, depending on the season. During winter, they do not eat at all. They feed all through the year to store fat under their skin which they slowly deplete during the winter. They hibernate to conserve nutrients and keep their bodies warm throughout the season. They wake up and emerge during spring where they mostly search for food during the day and rest at night. During the summer months, they love to wait out the hot weather and do their search for food in the late afternoons and early mornings.
